Musacchio – Logo – Post 4

This logo for the Rolling Stones is one of the most iconic and recognizable in music. The use of only three colors: red, white and black really makes it stand out. The bright red is particularly striking and very “in your face,” appropriate for a rock and roll band. Also, the illustration of the big lips and tongue is automatically identifiable with Mick Jagger, because of his prominent facial features. The drawing is simple, but effective in this way. This logo really symbolizes the rock and roll aesthetic. Not only are the tongue and mouth used for signing, but the tongue sticking out reminds me of someone throwing up the “rock out” hand sign and sticking their tongue out. The overall design gives me a loud and wild feeling. Rock and roll fans are definitely the target audience for the logo and it’s perfect for a concert atmosphere, where everyone is singing along without their mouths wide open. The logo is appropriate and successfully reaches the carefree rock and roll fan. This logo inspired me because it’s true to the Rolling Stones brand. It sums up their image and sound in one simple illustration. It really creates a feeling with the use of color and design–something every logo should aim to do.

I think Matt’s examination of this logo was spot-on. The Rolling Stones represent that Rock ‘n Roll era in which sticking out was definitely the focus. Loud music, loud costumes and loud styles are all personified in this logo. It really is “in your face” and bold. When Rock ‘n Roll first became popular, many people were against it. And the tongue sticking out almost seems to be sticking it to the man, if you will. I think the choice of the designers NOT to use a black outline was key in this logo. It’s exactly what we learned about in class, and it makes the other features of the logo really pop out. Instead of containing the tongue and mouth with a border, the tongue can really protrude. The simple color scheme works. It’s very vibrant, and you simply can’t miss it.

I completely agree that this logo is extremely memorable. The use of the shapes, the colors, everything about it screams rock n’ roll. It’s so loud and in-your-face, and the use of the loud, bright red compliments that. It’s a logo that is very hard to miss and very hard to forget.
